Life insurance in Spain
Spain's life insurance market is the 5th largest in Europe by premium volume, but it is heavily dominated by bancaseguros — life insurance sold through bank branches. Around 65% of Spanish life premiums flow through bank channels. Term life (seguro de vida temporal caso de muerte) represents a relatively small share compared to savings-linked products.
INSS pensión de viudedad — the survivor's pension
Spain's INSS (Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social) pays a pensión de viudedad to the surviving spouse. The pension equals 52% of the deceased's regulatory base (base reguladora) — rising to 70% in cases of economic dependence. For a working-age Spaniard, this typically translates to approximately €400–900/month depending on contribution history and salary.
The pensión de viudedad is taxable and may be reduced by means-testing in some circumstances. For higher earners with mortgages and dependants, it replaces only a fraction of working income — private term life closes the gap.
Seguro de vida vinculado a hipoteca — watch the cost
Spanish banks routinely require mortgage life cover (seguro de vida vinculado a hipoteca) as a condition of approving a mortgage. The Ley Hipotecaria (2019) prohibits banks from forcing borrowers to purchase life cover exclusively from the bank's affiliated insurer — borrowers have the right to present an equivalent policy from any insurer. Standalone term life policies are typically 30–50% cheaper than bancassurance equivalents for the same coverage amount. The bank must be named as co-beneficiary for the outstanding loan balance.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this calculator free?
- Yes — completely free, no account needed. Nothing you enter is saved.
- Is life insurance payout taxable in Spain?
- Life insurance death benefits in Spain are subject to the Impuesto de Sucesiones y Donaciones (inheritance and gift tax), not IRPF income tax. However, direct beneficiaries (spouse, children) benefit from significant regional reductions — in Madrid and some other regions, the effective inheritance tax on life insurance payouts can be close to zero for immediate family. Check the rules for your specific autonomous community.
- Can I cancel a bancassurance life policy?
- Yes — under the Ley Hipotecaria (2019), you can replace a bancassurance life policy with an equivalent policy from another insurer at any time during the mortgage term. The bank cannot charge a penalty for substituting the life cover, provided the new policy meets their coverage requirements. Contact your bank's mortgage department to initiate the substitution.
