INSS pensão por morte helps — but typically replaces only a fraction of working income. Private life cover bridges the gap.
Brazil's INSS pays a pensão por morte to dependants — 50% base + 10% per dependant (up to 100%). For a working-age Brazilian at the average salary, this is typically R$1,500–3,000/month. Enter your estimate to reduce the required private cover.

Many Brazilian life policies are sold through banks (bancassurance) — standalone term life is typically more cost-effective. SUSEP regulates life insurance in Brazil.

Brazilian life insurance has high market penetration by volume (Brazil is Latin America's largest life insurance market) but low per-capita coverage amounts — driven by group/collective life insurance provided by employers. Individual term life remains significantly underpurchased relative to actual financial need.

Life insurance in Brazil

Brazil is Latin America's largest life insurance market by premium volume, but per-capita coverage amounts are low. The market is dominated by seguro de vida em grupo (group life insurance) provided through employers — employees often have modest life cover via their company without knowing the exact sum insured. Individual term life remains significantly underpurchased.

INSS pensão por morte

Brazil's INSS (Instituto Nacional do Seguro Social) pays a pensão por morte to dependants of a deceased insured worker. The pension is calculated as:

  • 50% of the salário de benefício (reference salary based on contributions)
  • Plus 10% per dependant, up to a maximum of 100%
  • Minimum: R$1,412/month (2024 minimum wage)
  • Maximum: R$7,786.02/month (2024 INSS ceiling)

For a worker earning above the INSS ceiling, private life insurance is particularly important — the INSS benefit is capped regardless of actual salary.

FGTS — an often-overlooked death benefit

The FGTS (Fundo de Garantia por Tempo de Serviço) balance accumulated by a formal-sector worker is released to legal heirs and dependants on death. The employer deposits 8% of monthly salary into the FGTS account. For a 40-year-old with 15 years of formal employment, the FGTS balance might be R$40,000–100,000 depending on salary history — a meaningful but often forgotten asset when calculating life insurance needs.

Caixa Vida e Previdência (government-linked, large distribution via Caixa Econômica Federal branches) is a major player. Others: Bradesco Vida e Previdência, SulAmérica Vida, MetLife Brasil, Porto Seguro Vida, Zurich Brasil, Tokio Marine Vida. The market is regulated by SUSEP (Superintendência de Seguros Privados).

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator free?
Yes — completely free, no account needed. Nothing you enter is saved.
Is life insurance payout taxable in Brazil?
Life insurance death benefits in Brazil are generally exempt from income tax (IR) for the beneficiary. They are also not included in the estate (inventário) and pass directly to named beneficiaries without going through probate — a significant advantage for estate planning. Consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.
What is the difference between seguro de vida and previdência privada in Brazil?
Seguro de vida (life insurance) pays a death benefit to beneficiaries if the insured dies during the policy term — pure protection, low cost. Previdência privada (private pension — PGBL or VGBL) is a long-term savings/retirement product with life insurance elements, but primarily designed for retirement accumulation. For family financial protection, standalone seguro de vida (pure term) is almost always more cost-effective than savings-linked products.
