How does life insurance work in Russia?
Russia has three distinct life insurance products, and the naming can be confusing for those familiar with Anglo-Saxon markets.
- Рисковое / срочное страхование жизни (Term / pure-risk life insurance)
- Pure death protection: if the insured dies within the policy term, the full sum insured is paid to named beneficiaries. If the insured survives, premiums are not returned. This is the cheapest way to secure a large payout for your family and is what this calculator helps you size.
- НСЖ — накопительное страхование жизни (Savings life insurance)
- A long-term savings product (5–30 years) with a life insurance wrapper. The policyholder pays regular premiums; at maturity, they receive the accumulated capital with returns. If they die during the term, beneficiaries receive at least the sum insured (typically equal to total premiums paid). NSZh qualifies for a social tax deduction: 13% back on contributions up to ₽120,000/year (max ₽15,600/year refund). NSZh passes to named beneficiaries outside the estate — no notaire, no waiting 6 months.
- ИСЖ — инвестиционное страхование жизни (Investment life insurance)
- Similar to NSZh but with an investment component — part of the premium is allocated to market assets (equities, bonds, indices). Return potential is higher but not guaranteed. Popular as an inheritance planning tool due to its out-of-estate status.
Russia's state safety net for surviving families
- Пенсия по потере кормильца / Survivor's pension (SFR)
- A monthly pension paid to children of the deceased under 18 (or 23 if studying full-time), disabled spouses, and a parent/guardian caring for children under 14. The amount is calculated based on the deceased's accumulated pension points (ИПК). Typical values range from ₽5,000 to ₽15,000/month. You can find an estimate on the Gosuslugi portal (section: Pension). Entering this in the calculator meaningfully reduces the required sum insured.
- Пособие на погребение / Funeral grant (SFR)
- A one-time fixed payment of ~₽8,963 in 2025 — very modest. Actual funeral costs in Russia run ₽40,000–100,000. Some regions provide additional supplements.
Mortgage insurance and life insurance: what's the difference?
Russian lenders require borrowers to take out ипотечное страхование жизни (mortgage life and disability insurance). On the borrower's death, the insurer repays the outstanding loan balance to the bank — the family keeps the property debt-free.
However, this policy protects the bank, not your family's broader financial needs. It pays nothing beyond the mortgage balance. A separate term life policy fills the gap — income replacement, living expenses, and children's education — at a relatively low annual cost. Enter your mortgage balance in the calculator: if you have mortgage insurance already covering it, set the field to zero or reduce it accordingly.
Inheritance and taxes in Russia
Russia abolished the inheritance tax in 2006. Heirs pay only государственная пошлина (state duty): 0.3% for close relatives (spouse, children, parents, siblings), capped at ₽100,000; 0.6% for all others, capped at ₽1,000,000. This makes wealth transfer in Russia far cheaper than in most European countries.
NSZh and ISZh contracts with a named beneficiary bypass the estate entirely. The payout is processed directly by the insurer within weeks of the death claim — no court, no notaire, no 6-month waiting period. This makes insurance products a powerful tool for quick liquidity for surviving families.
Tax deduction for NSZh: Since 2024, the combined social tax deduction limit has increased to ₽150,000/year (covering NSZh contributions, medical expenses, education, etc.). At a 13% tax rate, the maximum annual refund on the NSZh portion is ₽19,500.
Major life insurers in Russia
The Russian life insurance market is dominated by subsidiaries of major financial groups:
- СОГАЗ-Жизнь — part of the Gazprom/Bank Rossiya financial group; one of the largest life insurers by premium volume.
- Сбербанк Страхование жизни — Sberbank subsidiary; dominant in NSZh/ISZh products distributed through bank branches.
- АльфаСтрахование-Жизнь — Alfa Group; strong in term life and corporate group insurance.
- Ингосстрах-Жизнь — life subsidiary of Ingosstrakh; competitive on term life rates.
- РГС Жизнь (Росгосстрах) — formerly state-owned insurer, now private; wide regional network.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this calculator free?
- Yes — completely free, no account needed. It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is saved or transmitted.
- Can I get life insurance with pre-existing health conditions?
- Yes, though terms vary by insurer and diagnosis. Most insurers use a health questionnaire. For higher-risk profiles, they may apply premium loadings or exclude specific conditions. Many insurers offer simplified underwriting (no medical exam) for sums insured up to ₽3–5 million. Shopping across multiple insurers is advisable.
- I have no dependants. Do I need life insurance?
- If no one depends financially on your income, classic death cover is less important. However, a policy covering disability (Groups I–II) or critical illness (cancer, stroke, heart attack) protects your own financial wellbeing regardless of dependants — worth considering as a standalone product.
- How quickly is the death benefit paid in Russia?
- By law, the insurer must make a decision within 30 working days of receiving a complete claim package. In practice, major insurers (SOGAZ-Zhizn, Sberbank Strakhovanie, AlfaStrakhovanie) typically pay within 2–4 weeks. NSZh/ISZh with a named beneficiary are processed the same way, without the 6-month estate waiting period.
- When is the best time to buy?
- The earlier the better — premiums rise with age, and deteriorating health can make cover more expensive or lead to rejection. The natural trigger moments are taking out a mortgage, having a child, or when your income grows significantly and others become financially dependent on it.
